Walter and Patty Berglund were the young pioneers of Ramsey Hill—the first college grads to buy a house on Barrier Street since the old heart of St. Paul had fallen on hard times three decades earlier. The Berglunds paid nothing for their Victorian and then killed themselves for ten years renovating it. Early on, some very determined person torched their garage and twice broke into their car before they got the garage rebuilt. Sunburned bikers descended on the vacant lot across the alley to drink Schlitz and grill knockwurst and rev engines at small hours until Patty went outside in sweatclothes and said, “Hey, you guys, you know what?” Patty frightened nobody, but she’d been a standout athlete in high school and college and possessed a jock sort of fearlessness. From her first day in the neighborhood, she was helplessly conspicuous. Tall, ponytailed, absurdly young, pushing a stroller past stripped cars and broken beer bottles and barfed-upon old snow, she might have been carrying all the hours of her day in the string bags that hung from her stroller. Behind her you could see the baby-encumbered preparations for a morning of baby-encumbered errands; ahead of her, an afternoon of public radio, “The Silver Palate Cookbook,” cloth diapers, drywall compound, and latex paint, and then “Goodnight Moon,” then Zinfandel. She was already fully the thing that was just starting to happen to the rest of the street.

The ship was reportedly attacked by up to three pirate skiffs at a time Somali pirates have hijacked a ship with at least 20 US crew on board, after what maritime officials described as a sustained night-time attack.The US-operated container vessel, Maersk Alabama, was seized in the Indian Ocean about 400 miles (645km) east of the capital, Mogadishu. The Danish-owned ship's crew members are believed to be safe, the European Union's maritime security force said. It is the sixth seizure in recent days, including a British and Taiwanese ship. Among the cargo of the 17,000-tonne Maersk Alabama was UN food aid destined for Somalia and Uganda. Pirates typically hold the ships and crews until large ransoms are paid by the shipping companies - last year the firms handed over about £80m (£54m). The huge increase in frequency of attacks has forced several navies to deploy warships in the Gulf of Aden. The BBC's Adam Mynott says in the past few weeks the warships have forced the pirates to switch the focus of their attacks further out into the Indian Ocean. Evasive actionIn a statement, the AP Moller-Maersk Group confirmed its ship had been "attacked by pirates and presumed hijacked" at around 0600 BST on Wednesday. "The vessel is deployed in Maersk Line's East Africa service network and was en route to Mombasa, when it was attacked approximately 500 km off the Somalia coast," the statement said. "Our initial concern is to ensure proper support of the crew and assistance to their families." The assault began late at night and apparently lasted for some five hours, according to maritime officials. The ship was attacked by up to three pirate skiffs at a time. It is believed to be the first ship with Americans on board to be hijacked in recent times. The BBC's correspondent in the region, Peter Greste, says hostages from previous pirate attacks have been largely well-treated, but the capture of Americans may change the equation. Somalia is largely under the control of a group with links to al-Qaeda, our correspondent says, and they may choose to make a political point out the situation. A US Navy official told the Associated Press that the government is in contact with the shipping firm, finding out all the details of the attack. Earlier this week pirates boarded a British-owned ship, the Malaspina Castle, in an area heavily patrolled by a European Union taskforce. The taskforce, consisting of six ships and two planes, is among almost a dozen anti-piracy patrols in the area. But pirates managed to seize 15 ships last month - a large increase on the two taken in January and February. One expert believes the weather had a bigger impact than the patrols on the pirates. Rashid Abdi, of the International Crisis Group (ICG), a Brussels-based think tank, said: "It was all down to the fact that the weather did not favour them. "And now the weather has improved, they're back in business again." More than 130 pirates attacks, including close to 50 successful hijackings, were reported in 2008, threatening one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. 昨晩見た夢 (Sync A World You Want To Explore)

昨晩、寝ていると、ふと窓の外に気配がする。カーテンは閉まっているのだが、その外に気配がするのである。この部屋は6階で、窓の外は車通りが多い道だ。その時間はおそらく午前3時ごろではないだろうか。いつもは、そんな気配がすれば、起きてカーテンを開けて様子を確かめるのだが、昨晩は妙に寒気がして思いとどまった。というよりも、あまりに恐ろしくてベッドを出られないのである。そのとき、急に過去の記憶が甦った。「こんなことが過去に一度あった」と。おそらくそれほど前のことではない。少なくても5年以内、それも1998年夏から2000年夏までの間の2年のどこかだと思う。当時、実家（都内）に住んでいた私は、夜にベッドから空を見上げていて、とんでもないものを見たのである。それは、上空、真っ黒な空の大きな部分を占める、気配である。よく見ると、真っ暗な空のところどころに、明かりらしきものがある。しばらくすると、事情が見えてきた。そらは、空を覆いつくすような大きさの、平べったい宇宙船のようなものだったのだ。その宇宙船らしきものは、見上げた空（左右に建物があるので、視野角にしてざっと30度ぐらい）の大部分を覆っている。身が凍る思いだった。その後、呆然と立ち尽くしながら空を見上げる自分。何が起きているのか、よく分からない。その後、宇宙船のようなものは、何か活動していたような気がするが、それから後のことはよく覚えていない。話は昨晩に戻る。外の気配に悪寒を感じた自分は、やがて、この記憶を取り戻した。そして、直感的に「同じものが外にある」と思い、カーテンを開けることを拒否してしまったのだ。その後、そのまま隠れるように寝たのだが、夢を見たようだ。内容は覚えていないが、明け方うなされて起きたとき「この話はだれにも話してはいけないものだ」という強烈な思いだけが残っていた。結局、もう一度寝て、朝ふつうに起きたときには、嫌悪感というか不快感はかなり減っていたが、とにもかくにも、これだけの内容を覚えていたので、とりあえず書き留めておこうと思ってこのblogを書いている。実際には、書き始めるまでそれなりの葛藤があったが、もしただの夢なら、後からの笑い話にできる、と思って書き始めて一気に書き終えた。5年ほど前の記憶も、今考えるとそれそのものが夢だったということもあり得る。夢の記憶ということで忘れていたが、同様の夢がトリガーになって急に思い出したということもあるだろう。それとも、宇宙人に肝心な部分の記憶を消されたのだろうか? すべては、夢の中である。

Most shops these days seem to know that using a Version Control System is necessary for the organization of a large software project involving multiple developers. It’s essential to allow each developer to work on their part of the project and commit the changes to a central repository, which the rest of the developers can then pull down into their working sandbox. Its an effective way to develop that avoids overwriting of changes, and allows for easy rollback and history. However, one problem I see over and over again is either lack of branching altogether, or doing it in a manual way that drifts the branch further out of sync with trunk as time goes on, and then trying to manually merge this with the trunk code when the branch is done. For those who don’t know, trunk is basically your mainline, in which code can be branched off of for features that won’t interfere with trunk until they are merged at some later point. This allows for testing changes without bothering other developers, but still being able to keep a commit history.
